Partly Facetious: politicians' faces and their expressions
"I thought he was being a bit dramatic."
"Who?"
"Chaudhary Sahib."
"One of the Cousins?"
"Indeed."
"That is a surprising comment - the man has an expressionless face...I mean of all politicians I know his is the most inscrutable face..."
"Musharraf's is more so."
"I don't think so. Musharraf lets his annoyance show on his face... and that's because people surrounding him get scared when he shows displeasure so I guess it's calculated but then you can't call him inscrutable."
"What about the Chosen One?"
"The Chosen One is rather mild mannered. I mean wasn't that a critical condition for Musharraf to choose him? And mild mannered people don't have inscrutable expressions."
"What about Nawaz Sharif and BB?"
"Don't make me laugh. They wore their hearts on their sleeves."
"OK, so the Cousin is the best of the lot in this. But how was he being dramatic?"
"He said it would be the Maulanas' fault if the country plunged into a crisis because of their threat to resign from the National Assembly in protest against the passage of the Protection of Women Bill."
"Plunge into a crisis! Yes I agree...it's too dramatic a statement. I mean even if the Maulanas come out on the streets it is debatable whether their supporters will either come out on the streets or if they do sustain their anger against such a law that was so obviously anti-women."
"The Maulanas are against free sex."
"But only the poor get caught!"
"That's life! And poverty! But the Maulanas are playing into Musharraf's hands again."
"Again?"
"Like their deal with Musharraf that he will take off his uniform in return for their support."
"Right and now how are they playing into Musharraf's hands?"
"The world media is saying Musharraf is so courageous as to take on the might of the Maulanas."
"But that's not true. It took him seven years to partially repeal a gross injustice to half of the population of this country."
"Right but there you go."
